Michael Levine
Institution: Massachusetts Maritime Academy - Bourne, MA
Sport: Football
Michael's Testimonial:
"Hello, my name is Michael Levine. Mental health is one of the least talked about issues in collegiate and high school sports. One of the biggest struggles I ahd in high school was depression. Days felt lonely and long sometimes. You can put a fake smile on all day and people don't realize the struggles you are going through. My scapegoat for this was sports. Football helps me relax and be happy with myself. Working out with teammates helps relieve all the stress and emotions I had.
Looking back on my past experiences, I think I could've reached out to more coaches and teachers. These are the people that are the most trustworthy. I chose to tell my teammates that I was having a rough time. They were there for me when I needed it. It helped me through the years and it built bonds that can never be broken. Your friends and teammates will always be there for you no matter what.
Being active and organized has helped me control my mental health. I started going on bike rides throughout the South Shore every weekend. I started going on bike rides when my nana suggested going on a trail in Dorchester, Mass. Biking helps me enjoy life as it is and lets me reflect on my life as a whole. Stayong organized is one of my biggest debriefers. Being organized and knowing what you are going to do throughout the day helps me not freak out about what I'm doing next. Doing something you love really helps with your mental health."
